Rio Decleration on Environment and Development – AGENDA 21 (1992)

The goals of sustainable development are outlined in Agenda 21, which offers a plan of action for the 21st century in the spheres of development and environmental policy as well as guidelines for sustainable development. It was adopted by 179 nations at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED, the so-called Earth Summit) in Rio de Janeiro (6/1992).

The Declaration contains 27 principles regarding policy, legislation, business and science which countries should uphold in the interest of environmental protection and sustainable development. A sustainable approach to development and pursuing an appropriate economic, environmental and development policy is intended to meet today’s needs without compromising the opportunities of future generations.
