Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (2000)
The Cartagena Protocol contains binding regulations under international law concerning the cross-border transport, handling and management of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Its primary goal is to enable member states to reach independent decisions on whether to approve the importation of such organisms; paramount concerns are the protection of biodiversity and safeguarding human health. The Protocol seeks in particular to prevent cross-border trade of genetically modified organisms without the knowledge and approval of government authorities. The main commodities concerned are corn and soybeans.
