GLOBAL REPORTING INITIATIVE (GRI) (1997)

GRI is an internationally recognized guide for corporate CSR reporting. It was established in 1997 by the Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economies (CERES) in partnership with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and is a good example of a successful nongovernmental initiative. GRI seeks to develop internationally standardized guidelines for sustainability reporting. GRI stakeholders include major corporations, but also smaller companies and environmental, human rights and labor organizations, along with government agencies. The goal is comparable reporting on economic, ecological and social performance.

Application of GRI guidelines is voluntary; participating companies can register on the GRI website.
